About Glenmont - Extended History

In 1923, a student of Christian Science was faced with a problem that required nursing care, but found it impossible to have her needs met within the Christian Science community in Ohio. There being nowhere else to go, she was obliged to enter a hospital.

Wishing to assist others who might have similar needs, she left each of the local area Christian Science churches $1000 to be used within 10 years to provide a nursing facility for Christian Scientists.

During those ten years, area Christian Science practitioners who had taken patients into their homes rather than allow them to go to hospitals, joined to form a non-profit corporation. State laws were complied with, a State charter was granted, a Board of Trustees was elected, and a location secured.

The Glenmont Home for Christian Scientists was opened on Dec 8, 1932 at 91 Miami Avenue which was leased. The name Glenmont derives from the first house actually considered for its location.

The Home was self-supporting in its second year but entirely inadequate to care for the number of applicants. On July 31, 1934, the Board of Trustees arranged to purchase a much larger home at 72 Woodland Avenue. On August 8 Glenmont moved into its new home, increasing capacity from 8 to 20 beds.

During 1941-42 more space was added to Glenmont as the spacious garage building was renovated into rooms, and in 1947 the home next door was purchased and converted into four rooms for spiritual renewal and retreat. In each situation, funds were donated that allowed the organization to pay the costs quickly and operate debt free.

Glenmont operated at this location through the 1980s. At that time it was decided that more modern facilities were required, and the present facility was built on farmland west of Columbus. The move to the present facility was completed in 1987.
